Entry and visas

Many nationalities, including UK, EU, US, Indian and Latin American passport holders, can get a free visa waiver or visa on arrival for stays up to 30 days; other nationalities need to apply in advance. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival, and travellers staying more than 30 days must buy local health insurance. Check the latest rules on the Qatar Ministry of Interior website before booking.

From the airport

Hamad International Airport (DOH) is the main gateway, about 15–20 minutes by taxi or metro from the city centre. The Doha Metro Red Line connects the airport to central Doha in roughly 20 minutes.

Getting around

The Doha Metro is clean, cheap and covers most sights; taxis and ride-hailing apps fill the gaps, and buses are cheap but slow.

Local tips

  • Dress modestly in public places; swimwear is fine at hotel pools and beaches.
  • Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and restaurants, but drinking in public is illegal.
  • Carry cash for souqs and small shops; cards are widely accepted elsewhere.
  • Avoid outdoor sightseeing in July and August, when temperatures exceed 40°C.
