Entry and visas

Most visitors need a visa. Many nationalities can get a 30-day visa on arrival (VOA) at major airports and seaports, or apply in advance for an e-VOA or other visa types on the official site, evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after arrival and have at least two blank pages. All travellers must also submit the free All Indonesia arrival card online within 72 hours before arrival; use only the official site or app, as other sites may charge a fee.

From the airport

Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is about an hour west of the city; the airport train reaches Tugu station in about 40 minutes. Trains from Jakarta take 6 to 8 hours.

Getting around

Grab and Gojek cars and motorbikes are cheap and easy. Becak cycle rickshaws are fun for short rides; agree the price first.

Local tips

  • Temple dress: cover shoulders and knees; sarongs are provided at some sites.
  • Mount Merapi is active; tours follow official exclusion zones.
  • Most sights open early; beat the heat and crowds by starting at 7 am.
  • Buy batik from cooperatives or workshops rather than touts in the street.
