Entry and visas
Most visitors need a visa. Many nationalities can get a 30-day visa on arrival (VOA) at major airports and seaports, or apply in advance for an e-VOA on the official site, evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The VOA costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiah, is single entry, and can be extended once for another 30 days at an immigration office or online. All travellers must also submit a free All Indonesia arrival card online within 72 hours of arrival; your passport must be valid for at least six months and have at least two blank pages.
Official websiteFrom the airport
Soekarno-Hatta Airport is about an hour from the centre; the airport train runs to BNI City/Sudirman station, and Grab or official Bluebird taxis are reliable.
Getting around
The MRT, LRT and TransJakarta buses avoid much of the traffic; pay with a contactless bank card or a stored-value card. Grab and Gojek are everywhere.
Local tips
- Traffic is heavy; plan one area per half day.
- Use Bluebird taxis or apps rather than unmarked cars.
- Malls are the city's social life and a cool escape at midday.
- Flooding can follow heavy rain from December to February.
