Before you go

Entry and visas

Most visitors need a visa. Many nationalities can get a 30-day visa on arrival (VOA) for IDR 500,000, or apply in advance for an e-VOA or other visa at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. All travellers must also submit the free All Indonesia arrival card online or in the app within 72 hours before arrival. Every foreign visitor to Bali pays a tourist levy of IDR 150,000, which can be paid online on the official Love Bali site or on arrival.

Official website

From the airport

Ngurah Rai Airport is near Kuta. Use the official airport taxi counter or a ride-hailing pickup point; Ubud is 60–90 minutes away.

Getting around

There is little public transport. Most visitors hire a car with driver by the day or use Grab and Gojek. Traffic between areas is slow.

Local tips

  • Wear a sarong and sash at temples; many lend them at the gate.
  • Drink bottled or filtered water, including for brushing your teeth.
  • Nyepi, the Day of Silence in March, closes the whole island, including the airport.
  • Don't ride a scooter without a valid licence and helmet: insurance won't cover you.

Areas worth knowing

  • Seminyak and Canggu
  • Mount Batur
  • Central highlands
