Before you go

Entry and visas

Italy is in the Schengen area: up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Many nationalities, including Indian and Saudi citizens, need a Schengen visa; visa-exempt visitors are registered at the border in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES).

From the airport

From Marco Polo Airport, take the Alilaguna boat, a bus to Piazzale Roma (about 25 minutes) or a water taxi. Trains arrive at Santa Lucia station on the Grand Canal.

Getting around

Walk and use vaporetti (water buses); multi-day passes are much cheaper than single tickets. Gondolas are for the experience, not transport.

Local tips

  • Day visitors pay an access fee on set peak days; overnight guests are exempt but pay the hotel tourist tax.
  • Pack light: there are many bridges with steps and no cars.
  • High water (acqua alta) can flood San Marco in autumn and winter; sirens give warning.
  • Avoid sitting to eat on monuments and bridges; it is fined.

Areas worth knowing

  • Lagoon islands
  • Rialto and Cannaregio
  • San Marco
  • Dorsoduro
