From the airport

Naples Airport is about 20 minutes from the centre by the Alibus. High-speed trains from Rome take about 1 hour 10 minutes.

Getting around

Metro lines (some stations are art galleries), funiculars up the hills and the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii and Sorrento.

Local tips

  • Keep phones and bags close in crowds and on the Circumvesuviana.
  • Traffic is chaotic; cross the road with confidence at crossings.
  • Ferries to Capri and the Amalfi Coast are cancelled in rough seas.
  • Pompeii has little shade: a hat and water are essential in summer.
