Entry and visas

Many nationalities, including UK and most EU, US, Indian and Latin American visitors, can enter the Philippines visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, but rules vary by passport and some nationalities need an e-visa or a visa from a Philippine embassy. All travellers must register on the e-travel system within 72 hours before arrival and show the QR code, and passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival. Check your own nationality's rules on the official Philippine e-visa site or with the Bureau of Immigration before booking.

From the airport

Vigan Airport has no scheduled flights, so most visitors arrive by bus from Manila or Quezon City (7–10 hours) or fly into Laoag International Airport and drive about 1.5 hours south. Buses stop at the terminal near the city centre, a short tricycle ride from the heritage district.

Getting around

The historic core is walkable, with tricycles (about ₱8–10 per short ride) and calesa horse carriages (about ₱150 per hour) for longer hops.

Local tips

  • Dress modestly when visiting churches and the cathedral; shoulders and knees covered is safest.
  • Bring cash: many small shops, eateries and calesa drivers do not take cards, though ATMs around Quezon Avenue accept foreign cards.
  • June to September is the rainy season, so pack a light rain jacket and check typhoon forecasts if travelling then.
  • Agree the calesa or tricycle fare before you set off, and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded market areas.
