Entry and visas
Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries, including the UK, most of the EU and Qatar, need an approved ESTA, which costs $40 since 30 September 2025; apply at least 72 hours before travel on the official CBP site. Others, including Indian, Saudi and Emirati citizens, need a visitor visa, and appointment waits can be long.

Getting around
Muni buses, streetcars and cable cars plus BART; pay with the Clipper card or a phone wallet. Walking the hills is steep but rewarding.
Local tips
- Pack layers: summer fog makes July cooler than September.
- Never leave anything visible in a parked car; break-ins are common.
- Book Alcatraz tickets only through the official operator.
- Some downtown blocks feel unsafe at night; use a ride-hailing app.
