Entry and visas

Many visitors can enter Oman visa-free for up to 14 days, while longer stays, work or study require a visa; other nationalities may need an e-visa or can get a visit visa on arrival. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival, and border staff may ask for onward tickets, accommodation proof and travel health insurance. Rules vary by nationality, so check the official Royal Oman Police e-visa site before booking.

From the airport

Most visitors arrive by road from Muscat, about 140 km or 1.5 hours on Highway 15; there is no commercial airport in Nizwa. Buses run twice daily from Muscat with a travel time of about 2 hours 20 minutes.

Getting around

The fort, souq and old quarter are walkable, but a car or taxi is needed for Falaj Daris, the Oman Across Ages Museum and day trips into the mountains.

Local tips

  • Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, especially around the mosque and souq.
  • The goat market runs on Thursday and Friday mornings; arrive by about 07:30 to catch the action.
  • Bargain politely in the souq for silver khanjars, spices and dates, and carry some cash in Omani rials.
  • Winter from November to March is the most comfortable season; summer afternoons can exceed 40°C, so plan indoor or early activities.
