Before you go

Entry and visas

Many visitors can enter Oman visa-free for up to 14 days, while longer stays, work or study require a visa; other nationalities may need an e-visa or can get a visit visa on arrival. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival, and border staff may ask for onward tickets, accommodation proof and travel health insurance. Rules vary by nationality, so check the official Royal Oman Police e-visa site before booking.

From the airport

Most travellers arrive by road from Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE via the E-11 (Khasab Road), taking about 2–2.5 hours from Dubai; Oman Air also flies from Muscat to Khasab Airport (KHS). Border formalities can take 30–60 minutes, longer on holidays.

Getting around

There is no public transport; a 4WD vehicle is essential to explore beyond Khasab, and fuel is cheap but facilities are scarce on remote roads.

Local tips

  • Dress modestly, especially in villages and away from resorts; swimwear is fine on beaches and boats.
  • Carry cash (Omani rial) as many small businesses and border fees may not accept cards.
  • Avoid photographing military installations, which are common along mountain roads.
  • The tourist season runs from late October to April; book hotels and tours ahead on weekends (Thursday–Saturday).
