Entry and visas

Many nationalities can enter Japan visa-free or get a visa on arrival for tourism or business for up to 90 days; you do not need to apply before you travel. If you need a multiple-entry visa, ask immigration officials when you arrive. Some travellers can apply for an eVISA online, and Visit Japan Web lets you complete immigration and customs forms before landing. Check your own nationality's rules with the Japanese embassy or the official visa information page before booking.

From the airport

The shinkansen from Osaka takes about 1.5 hours and from Tokyo about 4 hours; Hiroshima Airport is 50 minutes away by limousine bus.

Getting around

Trams run across the city to the Peace Park and to Miyajimaguchi for the ferry; IC cards work on most routes.

Local tips

  • The Peace Museum can be crowded with school groups; go early.
  • Check the tide times at Miyajima: the torii stands in water at high tide and can be reached on foot at low tide.
  • Miyajima's deer are wild; don't feed them.
  • Hiroshima fits well between Kyoto or Osaka and a trip west to Fukuoka.
