Entry and visas

Citizens of many countries, including the GCC states and the EU, can stay visa-free for up to a year; others apply for an e-Visa at evisa.gov.ge. Since 1 January 2026, foreign visitors must hold travel insurance for their whole stay, covering arrival and departure dates, with cover of at least 30,000 Georgian Lari; you may be asked for evidence at check-in or on arrival. Since 1 March 2026, foreign nationals who want to work in Georgia, including remotely or running a business, need a work permit before applying for the relevant visa or residence permit. Check the official Georgian pages for the current rules before you travel.

From the airport

Batumi Airport is about 15 minutes from the centre by taxi or bus 10. Trains and minibuses from Tbilisi take about 5 to 6 hours.

Getting around

City buses use a transport card; taxis ordered through apps (Bolt, Yandex) are cheap. The seafront is best by bike or on foot.

Local tips

  • The beach is pebbles, not sand: bring water shoes.
  • Rain is common in autumn; July and August are the driest months.
  • Try Adjarian khachapuri, the boat-shaped cheese bread with an egg.
  • Batumi is busy in summer; book stays early for July and August.
