Entry and visas

Most visitors need a visa to enter Jordan. A single-entry visa can be purchased on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport or at the Sheikh Hussein/North Border land crossing for 40 Jordanian dinars (about 56 USD), valid for 3 months. Alternatively, if staying at least 3 nights, you can buy a Jordan Pass online before travel (70–80 JD), which includes the visa fee and entry to major sites. If you plan to stay more than 14 days, you must register with the local police station within 14 days of arrival. Always check the official UK government entry requirements page for the latest rules, as

From the airport

Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) is the main gateway, about 30 km south of the city. The Sariyah Airport Express bus runs hourly to the city center for 3.30 JD (about 45–60 minutes), while taxis cost around 22.5 JD and ride-hailing apps about 15 JD.

Getting around

Amman has a growing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and a bus network, but taxis and ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem are the most practical way to get around the hilly city.

Local tips

  • Dress modestly, especially in older neighborhoods and religious sites; women should cover shoulders and knees.
  • Carry cash in Jordanian dinars for small purchases, taxis, and entrance fees, as not all places accept cards.
  • During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is discouraged, and many restaurants close until sunset.
  • Amman's hills make walking between areas tiring; plan to use taxis or ride-hailing for longer distances.
