From the airport

The nearest international gateway is Cape Town International Airport, about 35 minutes away by car, with shuttle services and hotel transfers available (roughly R400–500 for up to four people). Metrorail trains also run from Cape Town via Bellville, but services are infrequent.

Getting around

The compact centre is easy to cover on foot, but for outlying wine estates and after dark you will need an Uber or a taxi.

Local tips

  • Do not walk around town at night; take an Uber instead, as muggings are a real risk.
  • Wine estate restaurants and tastings fill up in summer, so book ahead for weekends and December–February.
  • Summers (December–February) are dry and can top 40°C, while winters (June–August) are cool and rainy — pack layers either way.
  • Wine bought for the trip home cannot go in airline hand luggage, so pack it in checked bags or arrange shipping.
