Before you go

Entry and visas

Most visitors need a visa before travel; there is no general visa-free or visa-on-arrival access, and applications go through an Eritrean embassy or consulate in your home country. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival and have at least 2 blank consecutive pages. Rules vary by nationality, so check the official UK government entry-requirements page or your nearest Eritrean embassy before booking.

Official website

From the airport

The main gateway is Asmara International Airport (ASM), about 130 km north; the drive to Senafe takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Shared minibuses and buses also run from Asmara and Adi Keyh.

Getting around

Local transport is by shared minibus or taxi; the archaeological sites are a short drive from town, so arrange a vehicle or walk where possible.

Local tips

  • Declare all laptops, mobile phones, cameras and other electronics on arrival; undeclared items can be confiscated by customs when you leave.
  • Bring cash in Eritrean nakfa; card payments are rare and ATMs are unreliable outside Asmara.
  • The rainy months are July and August, so plan visits for the drier months if you want to explore the ruins.
  • Travel outside major towns may require a permit; check current rules before heading to archaeological sites.
