Before you go

Entry and visas

British citizens and many other nationalities can visit Mexico as tourists without a visa, receiving a stamp on arrival that states the allowed length of stay. You may be asked to show a return ticket, proof of accommodation and sufficient funds. Entry rules depend on nationality; check the official Mexican immigration site or your nearest Mexican embassy before travel.

From the airport

The closest airports are Bajío/León (BJX), about 95 km west, and Querétaro (QRO), about 90 km southeast; both are roughly an hour by shuttle or official taxi into town. Mexico City (MEX) is a cheaper flight option but takes 4–5 hours by bus or car.

Getting around

The historic center is small and walkable, with local buses and inexpensive taxis for longer trips; most visitors never need a car.

Local tips

  • The town sits at about 1,900 m, so take the first day easy and use sun protection; nights from December to February can be cold.
  • June to September is the rainy season, with heavy afternoon downpours; mornings are usually clear for sightseeing.
  • Carry some cash in pesos for markets, small shops and local buses, and expect higher prices than in most Mexican towns.
  • Dress modestly when visiting churches, and walk with care on the uneven cobblestone streets and narrow sidewalks.
