Entry and visas

Greece is in the Schengen area, so many visitors from the Gulf, India, Spain and Latin America can enter visa-free for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, while others need a Schengen visa applied for in advance; check your nationality's rules before booking. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is being introduced, and travellers may need to register fingerprints and a photo at the border, with no fee. Always confirm current requirements with the Greek embassy or consulate and the official EU travel site.

From the airport

Mykonos Airport (JMK) is about 4 km southeast of town, with summer international flights and a 25-minute hop from Athens. Ferries and high-speed catamarans arrive at the new port in Tourlos (about 2 km north of town) or the old port in Chora; the SeaBus takes about 12 minutes into town for €2, and a taxi is the quickest option from Tourlos.

Getting around

Buses run from three depots in Chora to the main beaches and Ano Mera, with taxis, small boats and tour boats filling the gaps.

Local tips

  • July and August are crowded, windy and expensive; mid-May to June and September to mid-October are calmer and cheaper.
  • The meltemi wind is strong in summer, so bring a light jacket for evenings and hold on to hats and loose items.
  • Beach clubs and waterfront bars charge premium prices; eating and drinking a street or two back in Chora costs much less.
  • Book ferries and hotels well ahead around mid-August and the Pentecost weekend, when Greek travellers and pilgrims fill the boats.
