Before you go
Entry and visas
Most visitors need a visa for Rwanda; citizens of Commonwealth countries and many other nationalities can get a free 30-day visa on arrival, while others can apply online for an e-visa before travel. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival and have one blank page, and a yellow fever certificate is required if arriving from a country with transmission risk. Check the latest rules on Rwanda's official immigration website before you travel.
Official websiteFrom the airport
Most travellers arrive by minibus from Kigali (about 2.5–3 hours, roughly FRw 3,760) with companies such as Volcano, Horizon and RITCO from the Kigali bus station. By car the 126 km drive takes about 3 hours on the main road.
Getting around
The compact centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes, with taxis, moto-taxis and bicycle taxis available for longer trips and nearby sites.
Local tips
- Dress modestly and greet people politely; Kinyarwanda, French and English are widely spoken.
- Carry cash in Rwandan francs for markets, moto-taxis and small restaurants; bargaining is normal at the market.
- The market is open daily except Saturday, so plan shopping and browsing around that.
- March, April, November and December are the wettest months; bring a rain jacket and sturdy shoes for the hills.
